A day on your feet, lots of walking, a workout or, on the contrary, hours sitting down: in the evening, your legs often make themselves felt. Heavy, stiff, tired: the feeling is common, and a short routine helps you move into a more comfortable evening.
Here is a four-step routine (sit down, move a little, massage, use a device if you have one) to adapt to your day, and the signs that mean you should see a doctor.
Why your legs make themselves felt in the evening
Standing for a long time, especially without moving, constantly works the muscles of your legs and feet: the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work links prolonged standing with leg and foot pain and with fatigue. A long walk or a workout works your calves and thighs in a different way. And several hours sitting with your legs still also leave a feeling of stiffness.
In every case, the idea of the routine is the same: alternate rest and gentle movement, then take a few minutes for your legs.
1. Sit down and raise your legs
When you get home, sit or lie down, take off your shoes and raise your legs on a cushion, a pouffe or the arm of the sofa. The UK's National Health Service (NHS) recommends this when your ankles or feet have swollen a little at the end of the day. Stay like this for a few minutes, doing nothing else.
2. Move a little, gently
After a day on your feet, rest comes first; after a day sitting, a little movement does you good. A few ideas, without forcing:
- circle your ankles one way, then the other;
- point then flex your feet, about ten times;
- rise onto your toes, then lower slowly;
- take a short, easy walk if you've been sitting most of the day;
- gently stretch the back of your leg, calf and thigh, without bouncing.
If you spend your days sitting, you can also do these movements at your desk now and then: it's best not to keep your legs still for hours. After a day on your feet, save them for the evening, once you're settled.
3. Massage your calves and feet
A few minutes of massage, with your hands or an accessory, brings a feeling of relaxation. Work from the bottom upwards, with pressure that stays pleasant.
- With your hands: gently knead your calves, then the soles of your feet with your thumbs.
- With a roller: placed on the floor, a massage roller lets you slowly roll your calves and thighs, controlling the pressure with your hands.
- With a roller that wraps around the leg: sitting down, a wrap-around massage roller closes around your calf or thigh and massages both sides at once; you guide it with its handles.
For your feet, a ball under the arch or a massage mat such as Komua 01 · Foot Massager extends the moment: see our routine for tired feet after a day standing.
4. A device, if you have one
An air compression massager is another way to take this moment, with no effort. Komua 09 · Air Compression Leg Massager consists of sleeves that wrap around your feet, calves and thighs; their air chambers inflate and release rhythmically, and gentle warmth can accompany the session at the knees. You sit or lie down, choose a low intensity, and the session stops on its own after 20 minutes.
It's a moment of relaxation, not a treatment. Read the instructions before first use, and ask a doctor before using it if you are pregnant, have varicose veins or a health condition.
A 15-minute evening routine
- 3 minutes: shoes off, legs raised.
- 3 minutes: ankles, toe points, gentle stretching.
- 5 to 10 minutes: calf and foot massage, or a session with a device.
This is just an example: keep what works for you. The routine can fit into a wider after-work relaxation routine.
Which accessory for which need?
| Option | How to use it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Massage roller | On the floor, slowly roll your calves and thighs | People who like to control the pressure themselves, especially after sport |
| Wrap-around roller | Sitting, around the calf or thigh | A manual massage of both sides of the leg, without getting on the floor |
| Air compression massager | Sitting or lying down, 20-minute session | An effortless moment at the end of the day |
| Foot massage mat | Sitting, feet resting on it | When it's mostly your feet that are tired |
These devices are gathered in our legs and feet selection. If you work on your feet, see also our tips for working on your feet all day.
Mistakes to avoid
- Massaging a painful area hard: a massage should stay pleasant.
- Massaging or using a device on damaged skin, varicose veins or a swollen, painful area.
- Falling asleep during a session with a device.
- Staying still all evening after a day spent sitting.
When to see a doctor?
Tired legs in the evening are common. Ask a doctor if swelling in your ankles or legs doesn't improve within a few days or gets worse, if pain comes back every evening, or if you have diabetes and your legs swell. Get medical help straight away if one leg swells for no obvious reason, turns red, hot or painful, or if you're short of breath or have chest pain.
